Rheumatology is the medical specialty that focuses on arthritis and related rheumatic diseases.
A rheumatologists is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of rheumatic and muscoskeletal diseases such as arthritis and lupus. Rheumatic diseases are characterized by pain and inflammation in the joints and associated nerve structures, and muscle soreness and stiffness.
Rheumatic diseases are often complex and difficult to diagnose and treat. They may be actute (rapid onset) or chronic (last a long time). During treatment, the rheumatologist assesses systemic involvment, determines the need for orthopedic intervention or hospitalization, and analyzes the results of laboratory test and radiological examinations.
