Mammography uses low doses of X-rays to produce images of the soft tissues of the breast to detect abnormal growths such as tumors. Once the mammogram is completed, the Radiologist analyzes the image for any abnormal findings. Mammograms are often used together with an ultrasound especially for women with dense breasts.
Mammograms are used as a screening tool in women with no symptoms, and to detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.
- digital mammography (full-field digital mammography)
- computer-aided detection (CAD)
