aphasia Aphasia is a communication disorder caused by damage to the specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension, and gets in the way of a person's ability to use or understand words. Symptoms Symptoms may include issues with: social development academic performance personal relationships employment opportunities self-sufficiency Causes Causes may include: stroke or brain injury with damage to one or more parts of the brain that deal with language head injury brain tumor or brain infection dementia Treatments Treatment may include: speech-language therapy non-verbal communication therapies speaking slowly and staying calm when talking group therapy
