Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs, caused by infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms. 


Symptoms may include:


  • cough with greenish or yellow mucus
  • bloody sputum
  • fever with shaking chills
  • sharp or stabbing chest pain worsened by deep breathing or coughing
  • shallow breathing
  • shortness of breath
  • headache
  • excessive sweating and clammy skin
  • loss of appetite
  • excessive fatigue
  • confusion

Causes may include:


  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus)

Treatment may include:


  • medication
  • hospitalization
  • oxygen
  • pulmonology
