A menstrual condition characterized by the absence of menstrual periods for more than three monthly menstrual cycles. Amenorrhea may be classified as a primary or secondary condition.
- Primary amenorrhea is a condition where the menstrual cycle never begins at puberty - usually persists through the individual's lifetime
- Secondary amenorrhea is due to a physical cause and usually occurs later - menstrual periods which were normal and regular become increasing abnormal and irregular or absent
Causes may include:
- pregnancy
- ovulation abnormality
- birth defect
- eating disorders
- thyroid disorder
- obesity
Treatment may include:
- treating the underlying condition
- progesterone supplements/hormone treatment
- oral contraceptives/ovulation inhibitors
- dietary changes
