Stomach cancer
Symptoms may include:
- microscopic internal bleeding
- fatigue
- anemia
- heartburn
- abdominal pain
- black stools
- vomiting blood
- weakness
- unintended weight loss
- full feeling after meals (even when eating less than normal)
Causes may include:
- H. pylori infection
- stomach ulcers
- atrophic gastritis - acid-producing glands are slowly destroyed
- nitrates and nitrites - combine with other nitrogen-containing substances in the stomach and form N-nitroso compounds — carcinogens that are known to cause stomach cancer
- tobacco and alcohol use - can irritate the stomach lining which increases the risk of stomach cancer
Treatment may include:
- palliative care - aimed helping to relieve symptoms
- surgery
- chemotherapy
- radiation therapy
- medication
- targeted drug therapy
