Fragile X syndrome is caused by a defective gene on the X sex chromosome. This is the most common inherited form of mental retardation. Males are more likely to have the disorder.
Normally, the gene makes a protein required for brain development. The mutation causes a person to make little or none of the protein, which results in the symptoms of Fragile X.
Symptoms may include:
- mental retardation
- difficulty interacting socially
- avoiding eye contact
- hand biting
Treatment may include:
- educational therapy
- behavioral therapy
- physical therapy
- medication
