acute pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of one or both kidneys


Symptoms may include:


  • chills
  • fever
  • pain in the lower part of the back
  • nausea
  • frequent, painful urination
  • enlarged kidney

Causes may include:

  • physical obstruction to the flow of urine
  • backflow of urine from the bladder into the ureter
  • bacteria

Treatment may include:

  • medication
  • hospitalization
  • surgery
