Volunteer Opportunities

Adult Volunteers
Volunteering is good for your health.  Opportunities are currently available for volunteers in the service areas listed below.  Unless otherwise stated, minimum of 6 month (or longer) commitment is required.
  • SERVICE SPOTLIGHT - RWJ Hamilton Gift Shop - To better meet the needs of our community, we are looking to expand our gift shop hours.  Volunteer opportunities are available weekdays 5 pm to 7:30 pm and weekends 10 am to 2 pm.  If you are customer service oriented, friendly and caring, we'd like to hear from you.  609-631-6981
 
  • Cancer Institute of New Jersey at Hamilton - Front desk reception / greeter - Opportunities are available weekdays 8:00 am to noon or noon to 4 pm. 
  • Central Sterile Supply Runner - Deliver surgical equipment to the operating rooms and patient care equipment to the nursing units.  Must be comfortable with periods of walking and standing. Volunteer shifts are available Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Training is provided.
  • Center for Health & Wellness / Community Education - Volunteer needed to register community members for cholesterol screenings the first three (3) Thursdays of the month - 7:30 am to 9:30 am
  • Gift Shop - Various openings are available Monday through Friday to volunteer in the hospital's gift shop - 4 pm to 7:30 pm or 5 pm to 7:30 pm   Hospital Auxiliary membership is required. Training is provided.
  • Greeter - The Cancer Institute of NJ at Hamilton - Volunteers are needed at the front desk to welcome patients and their families and to provide direction to new patients.  Several shifts are available weekdays 9 am to 1 pm.   The waiting room has a warm and cozy "living room" atmosphere.  Greeter position is sedentary and would be ideal for an applicant who enjoys reading or crocheting / knitting.
  • Health Information Management (Medical Records) - Excellent computer / data entry skills to enter follow-up information into the cancer registry database 1 to 2 x's per week.   Additionally, this volunteer position also involves assistance with mailings ... labeling, folding, stuffing.
  • **Information Desk Reception** - Volunteers are needed at the main hospital information desk.  Highly visible position requiring excellent customer service skills, telephone skills, computer skills and exceptional "people" skills.  Duties include greeting all visitors to the hospital, assisting them with destination information and directing them to the Courier for escort.  Varied shifts are currently available.  Training will be provided ... Long term commitment desired.
  • **Information Desk Courier** - Volunteers are needed at the main hospital entrance to assist the information desk with patient and visitor way-finding, delivering flowers and escorting visitors to their destination.  Position involves 4 hour periods of standing and walking with occasional pushing of wheelchairs.  Highly visible position requiring excellent customer service skills and exceptional "people" skills and a willingness to be cross-trained to fill in as information desk reception.  Training will be provided ... Long term commitment desired.
  • Materials Management - Delivery of supplies and packages throughout hospital. Morning shifts available 8 am to noon.  Must be able to push carts and be comfortable with long periods of walking and standing. Training is provided.   
  • Outpatient Services Courier - Thursday mornings 7, 7:30 or 8 am start.  Friday mornings 7, 7:30 or 8 am start. Must have strong customer service skills. Greet and assist outpatients to their destination.  Some wheelchair pushing is involved. Must be comfortable with periods of standing and walking. Training is provided.
  • Patient Transport - Assist with wheelchair and stretcher transport. Must be comfortable with periods of walking, standing, pushing. Must have strong customer service skills. Training is provided. Openings:  Monday afternoons, Tuesday afternoons, Friday afternoons.
  • Surgery South "Greeter" -  Welcome patients to the surgery waiting room.  Facilitate patient check-in process.  Act as liaison between nursing staff, physicians and patients / families.  Assist patients and visitors with "wayfinding".  Training will be provided.  Strong customer service skills required.  Shifts are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. (or earlier) to Noon.
  • RWJ Hamilton Auxiliary - The Auxiliary works with the RWJ Hamilton Foundation and provides vital financial support to the hospital with its annual monetary gift which is raised from various fundraisers and events. Membership is required with annual dues of $12. Members of the RWJ Hamilton Auxiliary are eligible to volunteer in the hospital gift shop. In addition to fundraising events and activities, some of the members of the Auxiliary meet the third Friday of the month for lunch to craft soft, cuddly teddy bears for pediatric patients of the Emergency Department.     
  • Bedside Harp® - Volunteer internships are available at RWJ Hamilton through Bedside Harp® after completion of instructional folk harp classes, therapy training and certification. To learn more, visit www.bedsideharp.com or call 609.273.0068. All classes are held at RWJ Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness.
  • Pet Therapy - Volunteer opportunities are available for certified pet therapy dogs and handlers.    
  • Reiki - Minimum requirement - Level II Reiki certification. 

For information on how to become an adult volunteer, contact the volunteer office at 609.631.6981 to arrange for an application.  Once processed, an interview will be scheduled with the volunteer manager to discuss your interests and possible volunteer assignments.  

College Students - Summer 2013  Applications are no longer being accepted. 
For the summer of 2013, applications are available beginning January, 2013.  Completed applications and all related documentation must be received by April 30th, 2013.   The college applicant is agreeing to be available from mid-May, 2013 through August, 2013.  Unfortunately, neither shadowing or internships are available through the volunteer office.  Call 609-631-6981 to arrange for an application.

Junior Volunteers - Due to the overwhelming # of applications received for our summer junior program, applications are no longer available.  Please scroll further down to read about our school year junior program and when to apply.  Thank you for your inquiry.

Summer Junior Program 2013
Our summer junior volunteer program is "community based" and is for local area high school students between the ages of 15 to 17.    Volunteer applications cannot be accessed online.

  • Applications will be available through the mail after February 4, 2013. 
  • Applicants may request an application after February 4th by calling the volunteer office at 609-631-6981
  • Completed applications must be returned by Friday, March 15, 2013.
  • A program fact sheet will be included in the application packet which will further define the application timeline and requirements, and outline the selection process. 
  • Attendance at a mandatory program information session in April will be required.  The applicant will indicate their selection on the application.
  • Pending successful application process, a mandatory two-day orientation will be held the last week of June (Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27)
  • The summer program will begin on Monday, July 1st and run continuously through Friday, August 30, 2013 (nine weeks).  The student is committing to be available during both July and August.
  • The student will be committing to a set schedule of one morning, two mornings or one full day per week for nine weeks, (8:30 am to noon,                     8:30 am to 4 pm) Monday to Friday, no weekends.   

Participation in summer school, summer camps, summer educational programs and August sports practices may possibly conflict with the student's ability to participate in the summer junior volunteer program.  Please consider your prior commitments to other summer activities before signing up for the RWJ Hamilton summer junior volunteer program. 

A junior volunteer must first complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service to be eligible for completion of school forms and/or letters of recommendation from the volunteer office.

School Year Program 2013 - 2014
Our school year program is "community based" and is for local area high school students between the ages of 15 to 18.  

  • Local area high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 are eligible to apply in August, 2013.
  • Applications will be available by mail between August 1, 2013 and August 31, 2013.  
  • Applicants may request an application after August 1, 2013 by calling the volunteer office at 609-631-6981.
  • Applications will not be available online.
  • A program fact sheet will be included in the application packet which will further define the application timeline, requirements and outline the selection process.
  • The volunteer will be required to perform a minimum of 2 hours of service per week Monday through Friday only - no weekends. Start times are 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. 
  • A set schedule and assignment is agreed upon and the volunteer commits to that same schedule each week.
  • A mandatory 2-day orientation with TB testing will occur at the end of October, 2013.
  • Volunteering commitment will begin Monday, November 11, 2013 and run continuously through the end of June, 2014.  
  • The program fact sheet will review the available assignments with days and times available. 
  • Students will be matched with an assignment that meets their availability and the needs of the organization.
Participation in after school extracurricular activities and sports may possibly conflict with the student's ability to participate in the school year junior volunteer program. Please consider your prior commitments to sports and other after school activities carefully before signing up for volunteer service at RWJ Hamilton.
