In dialysis, the normal function of the kidneys, which include removing waste products from the body and regulating the body's chemical and water balance, are performed by a machine called a dialysis unit or by infusing a special fluid into the abdomen.
- hemodialysis - filters waste products from the blood using a thin tube that takes blood from an artery, moves it into the dialysis machine where it is filtered and then pushed back into the body through a tube in another vein.
- peritoneal - the doctor makes a small incision in the patient's abdominal wall and threads a thin tube into the abdomen. A special fluid flows through the tube and drains waste from the abdomen along with excess water.
