Polio is a disease that can infect the central nervous system and cause lasting disabilities in a small number of infected individuals. Polio is a contagious viral illness.

Causes

Causes may include:

 

  • contaminated water and food
  • direct contact with someone infected with the virus or who has recently received an oral polio vaccine (OPV), which contains live virus
  • living with a recently infected person
 
Treatments

Treatment may include:

 

  • medication
  • pain medication
  • ventilators to assist breathing
  • exercise

There is no cure for polio.
