With age, the lens of the eye hardens, reducing its ability to focus on nearby objects.  This condition usually develops when a person is in their 40s and gradually worsens with age.

The person can focus on nearby objects only by holding them at a distance.

Treatment may include:

  • a prescription for glasses to compensate for the inability of the lens to focus
  • bifocals or progressive addition lenses if the patient is already using glasses
  • reading glasses
  • surgery
