Wilson's disease is an inherited disorder that causes too much copper to accumulate in your liver, brain and other vital organs. Excess copper accumulates in the body and can damage many organs and tissues, but the liver and central nervous system are most often affected.
Symptoms may include:
- liver problems - copper first accumulates in the liver causing liver damage
- neurological problems
- tremors
- muscle spasms
- unsteady walk
- difficulty speaking and drooling
- behavioral or psychological problems
- eye, kidney and bone problems
Causes may include:
- imbibing foods with a high amount of copper (liver, shellfish, nuts, avocados and mushrooms)
- genetic defect that causes copper buildup
Treatment may include:
- medication
- liver transplant
