tonsillitis
 

Tonsillitis - the tonsils — fleshy pads on each side of the back of the throat — become infected with a virus or bacteria causing the tonsils to become swollen and painful.

 
Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

 

  • red, swollen tonsils
  • white patches on tonsils
  • sore throat
  • difficult or painful swallowing
  • headache
  • fever
  • chills
  • enlarged, tender glands (lymph nodes)
  • laryngitis
  • abdominal pain (in children)

  • medication
  • self-care
    • drink warm, soothing liquids — such as soup, broth and tea
    • gargle with warm salt water
  • surgery
