Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses which usually follows an upper respiratory infection which is caused by impairment in the drainage of sinuses and retention of secretions result in inflammation.
Causes may include:
- bacterial infections
- viral infections
- fungal infections (rare)
- conditions that impede sinus drainage and ventilation
- swimming in contaminated water
- diabetes
- blood dyscrasias
- allergic rhinitis
- orofacial trauma
- endotracheal intubation
Treatment may include:
- indirect drainage of ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses
- steam inhalation
- local heat applications
- rest
- medications
- surgery
- sinus irrigation
