anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which people have an intense fear of gaining weight and suffer marked weight loss.


Symptoms may include:

  • refusal to maintain a body weight over a minimum normal weight for a person's age and height
  • intense fear of gaining weight or getting fat
  • belief that they are overweight even when they are very thin
  • strictly limiting food and drink consumption
  • binge-eating
  • self-induced vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • physical changes
  • social withdrawal
  • hiding the weight loss under bulky clothes

Treatment may include:

  • individual or group psychotherapy
  • nutritional counseling
  • hospitalization
