Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which people have an intense fear of gaining weight and suffer marked weight loss.
Symptoms may include:
- refusal to maintain a body weight over a minimum normal weight for a person's age and height
- intense fear of gaining weight or getting fat
- belief that they are overweight even when they are very thin
- strictly limiting food and drink consumption
- binge-eating
- self-induced vomiting
- loss of appetite
- physical changes
- social withdrawal
- hiding the weight loss under bulky clothes
Treatment may include:
- individual or group psychotherapy
- nutritional counseling
- hospitalization
