Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. The three stages of tendon inflammation are:
- peritenonitis – localized pain
- tendinosis – may cause swelling or nodules on the back of the leg
- peritenonitis with tendinosis - pain and swelling when active
Causes may include:
- activities that involve sudden stops and starts
- repetitive jumping
- physical training on poor surfaces
- wearing inappropriate footwear
- overstressing the tendon
- overuse
Treatment may include:
- rest the tendon
- ice packs
- elevated foot
- medication
