achilles tendonitis
 

Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon.  The three stages of tendon inflammation are:

  • peritenonitis – localized pain
  • tendinosis – may cause swelling or nodules on the back of the leg
  • peritenonitis with tendinosis  - pain and swelling when active
 
Causes

Causes may include:

  • activities that involve sudden stops and starts
  • repetitive jumping
  • physical training on poor surfaces
  • wearing inappropriate footwear
  • overstressing the tendon
  • overuse 
 
Treatments

Treatment may include:

  • rest the tendon
  • ice packs 
  • elevated foot
  • medication
