Osteoporosis is a progressive condition in which bone density is lost. This causes the bones to weaken and to become more susceptible to fractures.
Symptoms may include:
- pain in bones and muscles
Causes may include:
- estrogen deficiency in women during and after menopause
- aging
- body weight - people who weigh less and have small body frames are more at risk for developing osteoporosis
- physical inactivity
- caffeine
- excessive alcohol use
- dietary calcium deficiency
- vitamin D deficiency
- certain medications
