Osteoporosis is a progressive condition in which bone density is lost.  This causes the bones to weaken and to become more susceptible to fractures.
Symptoms may include:
  • pain in bones and muscles
Causes may include:
  • estrogen deficiency in women during and after menopause
  • aging
  • body weight - people who weigh less and have small body frames are more at risk for developing osteoporosis
  • physical inactivity
  • caffeine
  • excessive alcohol use
  • dietary calcium deficiency
  • vitamin D deficiency
  • certain medications
Treatment may include:
  • endocrinology
  • rheumatology
