Neurofibromatosis is a genetically-inherited disease where the nerve tissue grows tumors that may cause serious damage by compressing nerves and other tissues.
Symptoms may include:
- tumors - may cause bumps under the skin
- colored spots
- skeletal problems
- pressure on spinal nerve roots
- neurological problems
Types include:
- type 1 - (von Recklinghausen's disease) – causes neurologic, cutaneous, and sometimes orthopedic manifestations
- type 2 – manifests as a congenital bilateral acoustic neurom
