Mitral valve regurgitation, also known as mitral regurgitation, is a condition in which the heart's mitral valve does not close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward into the heart. Mitral valve regurgitation is also called mitral insufficiency, or mitral incompetence.
Symptoms may include:
- heart murmur
- shortness of breath
- lightheadedness
- cough, especially when lying down
- heart palpitations
- swollen feet or ankles
- excessive urination
