encephalitis
 
Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain and it usually refers to brain inflammation resulting from a viral infection, even though a bacterial infection can sometimes cause encephalitis.  Cases can range from mild to severe.
 
Symptoms
Symptoms may include:
  • headache
  • lethargy
  • drowsiness
  • confusion 
  • seizures
  • fever
  • stiff neck
  • altered levels of consciousness
  • bulging in the soft spots of the skull
  • sensitivity to light

  • rest
  • fluids

  • speech therapy
 
Types
There are 2 types of encephalitis:
  • primary - involves direct viral infection of the brain and spinal cord
  • secondary - a viral infection first occurs elsewhere in the body and then travels to the brain
