down syndrome [Trisomy 21]
Down syndrome (trisomy 21) is a chromosomal disorder resulting in mental retardation and physical abnormalities.
Symptoms include:
  • delayed physical and mental development
  • infants who are quiet, passive, with limp muscles
  • children with Down syndrome have better visual motor skills than skills that require hearing
  • language skills may develop slowly
  • small head
  • broad and flat face with slanting eyes and short nose
  • prone to vision problems
