Acute respiratory failure occurs when the level of oxygen in the blood becomes dangerously low or the level of carbon dioxide becomes dangerously high.
Symptoms may include:
- respiratory failure
- shortness of breath
- cyanosis (bluish color to skin)
- coma
Treatment may include:
- hospitalization
- oxygen
- medication
- mechanical ventilation
