chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

COPD is a term that refers to a group of lung diseases that can interfere with normal breathing. It is estimated that about 13.5 million Americans suffer from COPD. It is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.


Symptoms may include:


  • ongoing cough
  • difficulty breathing
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • frequent colds
  • swollen feet, legs or arms

Causes may include:


  • smoking
  • air pollution
  • occupational exposures
  • heredity
